Q:  What do I need to do if I move and still want to remain a member of the Co-op?

A:  Call and tell us.  We will send you a new enrollment form to continue your membership.  You will not pay an extra membership fee and will be re-enrolled at your current rate.

Q: Can you explain the source of EcoChoice100, your 100% Renewable electricity?

A: EcoChoice100 is composed of 89.9% Biomass, 10% Wind Power and 0.1% Solar Power.  Biomass is the energy contained in plants and organic matter. In the mid-Atlantic region - our area - the major source of Biomass is landfill gas which is recovered from landfills throughout the region. Using this recovered landfill gas to generate electricity prevents it from venting into the atmosphere and in this way reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

Our Wind Power comes from Community Energy wind farms in the area. Community Energy, Inc. has been the Energy Co-op's supply partner for Wind Power since January 2002.

Our Solar Power comes from the photovoltaic systems of our members throughout the area.

Q: What does my $5.00 annual membership fee go towards?

A:  As a non-profit cooperative, you can be assured that your membership fee is put to very good use!  Because we are member owned, we ask our members to buy into their ownership stake. And did you know - our Member Rates have been the same since 1979, the year the Co-op was founded?  It's true.  Currently, membership and renewal fees make up about 6% of our annual operating revenue.

Q: After I sign up with the Energy Co-op, how long will it be before my service with you is activated?

A:  After mailing or electronically sending your enrollment form, you will be switched to the Energy Co-op on your next possible meter reading.  All requested supplier changes occur on one of your monthly meter read dates.  We need about three weeks before the meter read date on which you would like to be switched, to process your enrollment for that date.  If you would like to know more, please call our office for your account's meter read schedule.

Q:  I'm looking to cut costs by lowering my overall electricity usage - what are some changes I can make now?

A:  A first step is to consider using compact fluorescent lights and Energy Star appliances wherever possible, in your home.  Rebates are often offered for the purchase of these products.  Visit the Rebate Finder feature on the U.S. Department of Energy's website to find a store near year you
(The Energy Star program is a service of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy)
Also visit Energy Conservation and Efficiency on this site!

Q: Do you ever plan on offering Natural Gas service to members?

A: Right now, we don't think we could save people money on gas because the wholesale prices are so high.  We will continue to watch gas deregulation and the gas markets to see if we can offer some benefit to our members.
